Developing Friendships
First
Step Supported Living Services recognizes that one of the downfalls of
supported living can be the feeling of isolation and loneliness by consumers
who were used to residing in large congregate living situations and those who
do not have large circles-of-support. FSSLS makes every effort to encourage
and support friendship development. While support staff and consumers often
become very good friends, it is important that FSSLS clients also have
friendships with people who are not paid support.
FSSLS encourages consumers to get involved in community
activities where friendships can develop naturally. Our clients are involved
in college and local clubs, men's groups, Bible Studies, sports teams,
community theater program, and specific volunteer groups. To get the clients
started, FSSLS staff work with each consumer to determine the consumer's areas
of interest. Next, FSSLS staff research with the consumer ways to fellowship
with others in the community who have similar interests. Finally FSSLS staff
support the consumer however necessary to become an active member of the
selected group. Eventually, consumers are successfully included and can be
supported naturally by other members of the group and paid support can fade.

Additionally, FSSLS staff and consumers plan several activities a month for
everyone to get together. These activities are open to consumers, their paid
support, their families and friends. These activities allow further
development of appropriate and healthy relationship. Getting together for fun
and relaxation strengthens friendships and builds social skills. As
friendships develop feelings of social isolation decreases.
It is FSSLS program commitment, based on each consumer's desire, to assist and
encourage each consumer to build a strong circle-of-support with friends,
family members and paid staff.
